dSPACE: A Founding Member of ASAM
In 1998, leading European automobile companies founded the Association for Standardisation of Automation- and Measuring Systems (ASAM) to reduce the cost and time of development processes in the field of vehicle electronics. dSPACE was one of the founding members of ASAM and was already involved in the initial pre-Association activities in 1996. The goal of ASAM is to achieve standardized interfaces for data exchange and the compatibility of the software and hardware components used in the development process. Among the current members are well-known companies such as Audi, Bosch, BMW, Daimler, GM, Porsche, Renault, and VW.

ASAM MCD-3: An Object-Oriented API Interface
dSPACE focuses its activities on the field of ASAM MCD (formerly ASAP) and its standards ASAM MCD-1 MC, ASAM MCD-2 MC, and ASAM MCD-3MC (formerly ASAP1, ASAP2, ASAP3). We have successfully applied these interface specifications to various parts of our tool chain. We are also following the developments in other ASAM areas with great interest. ASAM MCD-3, an object-oriented API interface, allows synchronous data acquisition and central data storage, and as the “D” for diagnostics indicates, it supports diagnostics for electronic control units (ECUs).
ASAM MCD-3: Successful Implementation
DaimlerChrysler carried out several cross-tests between different tools supporting MCD-3. The cross-tests convincingly demonstrated the thoroughness with which dSPACE implemented the new standard. dSPACE was the only participant to run both a server solution (CalDesk) and extensive client solutions for M, C, and D (in M, Python, Visual Basic and C++). The CalDesk solution also gave the most complete support to the MCD-3 standard, and was the only server that was multiclient-capable and enabled automation without prior interactive configuration.
ASAM MCD-3 Interface in AutomationDesk
One of the automation libraries in AutomationDesk® allows the remote control of calibration tools according to ASAM MCD-3 (ASAP3); for example, in order to measure ECU-internal variables and perform automatic studies of ECU parameters. This results in fully automatic hardware-in-the-loop testing of ECUs.
Integration of Tools for ECU Calibration and Diagnostics into a HIL Test System
- Automated ECU calibration and diagnostics with AutomationDesk and CalDesk
- Integration of other calibration and diagnostics tools (e.g., INCA, Canape, DTS) via ASAM MCD interfaces
Calibration in the dSPACE tool chain
- Various ASAM MCD standards supported by the dSPACE Calibration System
